CCLS in Paris

English language

For students whose mother tongue is not English, CCLS in Paris requires the same level of English language as in London. This is equivalent to IELTS level 7.0 overall, with 7.0 in the writing subtest.

Please note that students are required to provide evidence of their level of English, which can be in the form of a certificate of IELTS, TOEFL or PTE Academic, or in accordance with the Postgraduate Taught English Language Guidelines. More information is available here.

We strongly recommend that students consider the English language requirements in good time, to ensure time to prepare and sit an appropriate test, as well as receive the results a minimum of 2-3 weeks before enrolling on the programme.

Critical Thinking and Writing in Law

All Queen Mary University of London law students in Paris are offered the opportunity to undertake in-sessional classes in Critical Thinking and Writing in Law (CTWL) as part of your LLM programme. For some it is an obligation of your offer of study.

The aim of the course is to support students in developing skills and abilities in using English in a legal context. As well as building confidence with the language, the aim is to support students in your legal studies, particularly with relation to the taught, assessment and dissertation elements of your study programmes.

The importance of clarity with economy of expression and appropriate language is constantly emphasised throughout the course, which is specifically tailored to postgraduate law students. You will learn how to compare the purpose and consequent linguistic features, style and register that characterise different genres within legal writing, focus on understanding the differences between the formulaic conventions of statute drafting, and consider the language that allows greater accessibility to the layperson.

Further information about the course is provided to students with firm offers.
